Newmont Red Lake Gold Mines – 120kV Substation Protective Device Coordination Study

Project Summary
Our team completed a comprehensive protective device coordination study for the main 120 kV/44 kV substation, covering critical protection zones including two 121 kV/44 kV power transformers, the 120 kV main SF₆ circuit breaker, and the 44 kV tie and feeder SF₆ breakers. The study was conducted in accordance with applicable codes, utility protection standards, and industry best practices to ensure reliable and selective system operation. The scope of work included:
- Performed a protective device coordination study for the main 120kV/44kV substation including the following zones of protection: two (2) 121kV/44kV transformers, one (1) 120kV main SF6 circuit breaker, one (1) 44kV normally closed SF6 tie breaker, two (2) 44kV SF6 feeder breakers.
- Provided a detailed report including a list of recommended settings to increase the dependability and security of the protection system.
- Developed and applied the updated relay setting files including all the associated logic.
- Performed completed testing of the new protective relay settings following application.
