New Gold – Rainy River Mine Power System Study

Location: Rainy River, Ontario

Customer: New Gold Inc.

Project Summary

Our team conducted a comprehensive power system study for the mine site's electrical distribution system, spanning from the 230kV level down to the 600/347 V distribution. The scope of work included:

  1. A detailed on-site data collection to gather the required information to model the Rainy River Mine electrical system from the 230kV level down to the 600/347V level.
  2. Protective device coordination study
    • Analyzed existing overcurrent protection settings and compared against industry best practices and applicable standards for protection systems.
    • Provided recommended overcurrent settings for the protective devices based on the applicable industry standards and best practices (e.g., OESC, IEEE/CSA, etc.).
    • Provided existing and recommended time current curves (TCCs).
    • Provide existing and recommended overcurrent protection settings in a tabular format.
  3. Arc flash incident energy analysis
    • Performed an arc flash incident energy analysis as per CSA Z462 and IEEE 1584 for the electrical distribution down to the 600/347V level.
    • Provided a list of recommended settings to reduce incident energy levels below 12 cal/cm2.
    • Installed arc flash adhesive warning labels.
